Magnolias

When I was growing up in Louisville, Kentucky, there was a huge, magnificent magnolia tree in our front yard.  I’ve never forgotten it.  The satiny smooth white blossoms, the heady, intoxicating smell, the fuzzy brown undersides of its leaves…

A few years ago I was walking in downtown DC with my brother, John.  We passed magnolia after magnolia after magnolia in front of the white marble government buildings.  He stopped, smelled them, turned to me and said, “We grew up with a magnolia tree in our front yard.  Remember?  I’ve always loved them.”

I planted a magnolia in our backyard about three years ago.  Here are some of its blossoms…
